Helen Haines: Australian MP injured in alleged political attack

The Australian Parliament resumed sessions under heightened security to pay tribute to independent MP Helen Haines, who was critically injured in an alleged deliberate attack on October 19. Authorities allege a driver rammed an SUV into Haines twice outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, resulting in the amputation of both her legs. Haines remains in a serious but stable condition at a Melbourne hospital.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese led the tributes, warning that a “normalization of the language of grievance and violence” is eroding public discourse, a trend he attributed in part to the anonymity of social media. Lawmakers expressed support for Haines, describing her as a “matriarch of the crossbench.”

Brendan Nugent, 43, has been charged with offenses including intentionally causing serious injury and violence against a public official. While a motive has not been established, the incident has prompted a national debate regarding the safety of elected officials. Australian police reported 1,067 instances of threats against elected officials in 2025.
