Australian PM Anthony Albanese apologises for Kylie Minogue podcast comments

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese appeared on the comedy podcast “Bush Deep” hosted by Nikki Osborne. During a rapid‑fire “shag, marry, date” segment he was asked to choose between Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman and Rhonda Burchmore. After initially citing his recent marriage, he replied “Oh, Kylie, clearly” and, when pressed, said “All of the above – she’s terrific.”

The remarks triggered a backlash from politicians and women's‑rights groups, with independent MP Zali Steggall calling the comments “entirely inappropriate” and Liberal shadow minister Sarah Henderson describing them as disrespectful to women and embarrassing for Australians. Albanese issued a one‑line statement on Monday: “I apologise unequivocally for the comments.”

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles defended the government’s gender‑equality record, noting the Labor cabinet is the first in Australian history with a gender‑parity split. Other ministers, including Tanya Plibersek, also defended Albanese’s broader record on women’s issues while acknowledging the mis‑step.
