Australian political and corporate activities face scrutiny in India and Ecuador

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns recently completed an eight-day official trip to Delhi and Mumbai, India, aimed at securing investment for the state. Government disclosures reveal the trip cost taxpayers approximately $225,120, with $164,398 of that total attributed to airfares for the Premier, his wife, the Treasurer, NSW Police, and staff. The Premier’s office noted that international flight costs were impacted by a global fuel crisis linked to Middle East conflicts.

Separately, Australian mining company Hanrine, owned by Gina Rinehart, is facing scrutiny regarding its operations in Ecuador. Allegations against the company include failure to address illegal mining on its concessions and potential complicity with heavy-handed security responses to community protests in La Merced de Buenos Aires. Local workers have also alleged mistreatment. Hanrine has denied these claims, characterizing community leaders as “anti-prosperity activists.” The company is also looking to explore the environmentally sensitive Llurimagua region for copper.
