Australian political debate intensifies over road safety and fuel costs

The Australian Coalition has criticized the Albanese Government following an independent assessment of the National Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030. Shadow Minister Bridget McKenzie reported that 882 Australians died on roads through August this year, noting a 19.7 percent increase in fatalities since January 2021. The Coalition attributed the rising toll to infrastructure funding cuts and a decrease in road policing, including a 30 percent drop in random breath tests compared to 2021.

Separately, the federal government has dismissed a Coalition proposal known as the ‘Fuel Price Shield.’ The opposition plan suggests automatically halving the fuel excise if Brent crude prices exceed US$100 per barrel. Finance Minister Katy Gallagher labeled the pitch an ‘unfunded, uncosted promise,’ arguing that the government prefers permanent cost-of-living relief through the tax system. Opposition energy spokesman Dan Tehan defended the measure, stating it would be offset by slashing tobacco excise to prevent inflationary pressures.
