Australian poll shows low leader approval amid inflation and AI worries
The Essential Poll, commissioned by The Guardian, surveyed 1,060 demographically weighted Australian voters. It recorded primary vote levels of 22% for the Coalition, 25% for One Nation and 31% for Labor.
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor’s approval fell to 33% with a disapproval rating of 44%, giving a net approval of minus 11. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese earned 38% approval and 52% disapproval, a net of minus 14. The poll showed 64% of respondents judged Labor’s handling of inflation as poor, while only 16% rated it good.
Regarding artificial intelligence, 28% would support a new data centre, 37% would oppose it. Concern over AI’s energy demand and its effect on power prices was expressed by 61% of voters, and 44% flagged worries about water supply. Additionally, 39% were uneasy about AI in general and 41% cited environmental and noise‑pollution concerns.
