Goodman Group abandons Sydney data centre project

Goodman Group has withdrawn its application for ‘Project Mars’, a proposed hyperscale data centre in Lane Cove on Sydney’s north shore. The project, valued between A$800 million and A$1.2 billion, was intended to be an 81-megawatt facility supporting artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The decision follows significant community opposition and concerns regarding the proximity of the 28-metre-tall facility to residential homes and a local public school. Utility providers Sydney Water and Ausgrid also raised concerns that the development could strain existing infrastructure and increase risks related to fire or electrocution.

In a statement, Goodman Group cited evolving federal and state policy regarding large-scale data centre development as a key factor in the withdrawal. The move highlights growing tensions surrounding the rapid expansion of AI-related infrastructure in Australia.
