Australian regional retail centers face shifts and redevelopment pressures
Australian regional shopping precincts are facing varying challenges and shifts as retailers respond to economic pressures. In Wollongong, The Reject Shop is scheduled to reopen in Wollongong Central in late October. This return follows a decade-long absence from the CBD and comes as other retailers, including Nike and Typo, have recently closed due to rising rental and cost-of-living pressures.
In Geelong, the decline of the Market Square shopping centre has prompted Mayor Stretch Kontelj to advocate for the compulsory acquisition of the privately owned site. The centre has seen the departure of major tenants such as Cotton On and Adairs, contributing to concerns regarding the city's CBD. Kontelj stated that because the owners have refused to sell or redevelop the site amidst a legal dispute, local or state government intervention may be necessary to facilitate new development for retail, hospitality, and housing.
