Australian regional water and sewerage infrastructure projects receive funding and rate adjustments

Infrastructure projects in Australia are addressing water and sewerage capacity to support regional growth and essential services.

In Queensland, the Gympie water treatment plant is receiving more than $66 million for its second upgrade phase through the Residential Activation Fund. This investment includes new pumps, filtration, and disinfection systems to support increased drinking water demand as the region expands. Total allocations for trunk infrastructure in the Gympie region have now exceeded $100 million across two funding rounds.

In New South Wales, Eurobodalla Shire Council has announced that sewerage rates will increase starting July 1, 2027, to fund essential upgrades. Projected expenditure on sewerage is expected to reach $179.5 million over a ten-year period ending in 2036, driven by cost escalations and the need to upgrade the Tomakin sewage treatment plant and 21 pump stations. The Tomakin plant upgrade alone is forecast to cost $62 million.
