Australian researchers advance solar-driven energy and efficiency technologies

Researchers in Australia are making advancements in solar-based energy technologies. At Adelaide University, scientists are developing a process that uses sunlight to convert waste plastics into hydrogen, syngas, and other industrial chemicals. This solar-powered photoreforming method uses photocatalysts to break down plastics at low temperatures, potentially addressing both plastic pollution and the demand for clean energy. The process is noted to be more energetically favorable than traditional water-splitting methods for hydrogen production.

Separately, engineers at UNSW Sydney have identified a method to improve the efficiency of next-generation solar cells. By ensuring ingredients remain evenly distributed during the manufacturing process—a concept compared to the precision required in baking—researchers have successfully reduced defects in advanced semiconductor materials. This discovery provides a new design principle for improving solar cell performance and the development of other semiconductor technologies.
