Australian researchers develop cyborg cockroaches for disaster rescue
Researchers in Australia have developed cyborg cockroaches designed to assist in search and rescue operations within disaster zones. The project, known as Paraborg, is a collaborative effort between the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales.
Using the Macropanesthia rhinoceros, a large burrowing cockroach species, scientists have created two specialized versions of the insect. One version is equipped with a small camera to help rescuers locate victims in tight spaces, while the other features a compact injection system. This injection mechanism uses a chemical reaction to deliver medication to survivors in areas inaccessible to humans or traditional robots.
To control the insects, researchers attach tiny electrodes to their antennae. By sending electrical signals, they can guide the cockroaches in different directions. While the added hardware increases the insects' weight and size, testing indicates that the cockroaches can still move effectively and carry loads up to one and a half times their own weight.
