Australian researchers enhance PET plastic degradation via single-atom enzyme modification
Researchers at the Australian National University have achieved a breakthrough in plastic degradation by modifying a single atom within an enzyme. This precise adjustment allowed the enzyme to break down PET plastic—commonly used in beverage bottles, food packaging, and synthetic textiles—nearly twice as effectively as previous versions.
Previously, scientists faced a trade-off where increasing an enzyme's speed often compromised its thermal stability or structural integrity. By focusing on a minute atomic change rather than extensive genetic restructuring, the team successfully enhanced the enzyme's efficiency while maintaining its ability to function under higher temperatures.
