Australian researchers halve estimated glide distance of greater glider to under 50 metres

Researchers led by Dr Ana Gracanin of the Australian National University studied the southern greater glider’s jumping ability across Monga National Park, Tallaganda National Park, Tallaganda State Forest and Mount Lindsey. Using infrared cameras, thermal imaging and laser‑pointer measurements, the team recorded 41 glides and found the longest distance was just under 50 m, far shorter than the historically cited 100‑m glide that stemmed from a 1940s misidentification with the yellow‑bellied glider.

The average launch height was 22 m, with an average horizontal travel of 19 m and a descent angle of about 43.5 degrees. The findings correct a long‑standing belief about the species’ gliding capability and highlight the need for accurate species‑specific data in wildlife research.
