Australia economy grows 0.4% in June quarter despite cost pressures

Australia’s economy expanded by 0.4% in the June quarter, exceeding consensus forecasts of 0.3%, though annual growth slowed to 2.1% from 2.5% in the previous year. The Australian Bureau of Statistics noted that while growth was subdued due to cautious household behavior, record sales of electric and hybrid vehicles helped bolster the figures as consumers sought to mitigate rising oil prices.

Economic pressures remain significant. High interest rates and the cost of living continue to impact the household sector. While essential spending remains resilient, discretionary spending is expected to face a slowdown. Retailers are managing profitability through cost controls and operational improvements, but a frosty outlook persists as temporary supports like fuel tax credits fade.

The construction industry is facing challenges including labor shortages and rising material costs, which have increased by over 50% since before the pandemic. Additionally, a review into a Telstra network outage attributed service reliability issues to budgetary prioritization and staffing shortages. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of Australia faces a policy dilemma as inflation remains above target, potentially necessitating further interest rate hikes.
