Australian retailers expand automation amid senior concerns

Retailers in Australia are increasingly adopting automation and self-service technologies, a trend that is meeting both technological advancement and consumer resistance. Woolworths has begun rolling out Scan&Go smart trolleys in select Western Australian stores, including Harrisdale and Secret Harbour. These trolleys allow customers to scan and bag items in real-time using a tablet, helping them track spending and access specials as they shop.

However, National Seniors Australia has raised concerns regarding the rapid shift toward self-service checkouts and the reduction of cash options. While industry research suggests many shoppers value the speed and privacy of automation, a significant portion of the population remains hesitant. A 2023 survey by National Seniors Australia found that 48 per cent of respondents never used self-service checkouts, highlighting potential accessibility and social challenges for older Australians who prefer human interaction and traditional payment methods.
