Australian schools celebrate Book Week to promote literacy

Schools across Australia have recently participated in Book Week, an annual celebration designed to foster a lifelong love of reading and storytelling among students. The event features various activities, including costume parades, classroom reading sessions, and themed educational challenges.

At Beenleigh State School, the celebration served to bring literature to life through tangible mental imagery. Data from Google Trends indicates that while classic characters like Alice in Wonderland and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz remain popular, search interest for Spider-Man has overtaken Harry Potter this year. Other trending costume searches include Bluey.

In the North Central region, Broadford Primary School utilized the theme ‘Symphony of Stories’ with teachers and students dressing as characters from Toy Story and various fantasy figures. Broadford Secondary College engaged students through a Marvel Villains themed escape room and coding-based challenges. Similarly, Our Lady Of The Way Primary School held celebrations featuring staff dressed as Mr Men and Little Miss characters alongside students in a variety of book-inspired costumes.
