Australian schools utilize arts and literacy programs to boost student engagement

Educational initiatives in Australia are focusing on student engagement through specialized extracurricular activities. At Phoenix P-12 Community College in Ballarat, the Arts Academy provides workshops in visual arts, dance, acting, and directing for public school students. The program, which grew from 20 to 75 participants, aims to provide expert training to students in specific socio-economic areas who may not have access to private tuition.

Students participating in the academy reported that the space helps them cope with social interaction and provides a sense of community for those with diverse needs, including neurodivergent students.

Separately, East Devonport Primary School celebrated Book Week with the theme ‘symphony of stories’. The event included character parades and book fairs designed to promote literacy and imagination in a digital age. School staff noted that such celebrations help maintain student interest in literature from early childhood through higher education.
