Australian seniors gain new transport and cost‑of‑living benefits in NSW and WA

From 28 July, seniors and pensioners in New South Wales can link their Gold Opal card to a credit or debit card, phone or smartwatch via a Transport Connect account and use contactless payments on public transport. The change lets users tap on and off with the linked device while keeping access to the $2.50 daily fare cap and $17.50 weekly cap. Transport Minister John Graham said the move gives “hundreds of thousands of Gold Opal travellers” more choice, and Seniors Minister Jodie Harrison urged seniors to sign up.

In Western Australia, the state government began issuing an annual cost‑of‑living supplement to WA Seniors Card holders. Single seniors receive A$114.20 and couples A$171.30, payable after registration by 31 May each year. The payment is part of a broader package of concessions that includes free off‑peak public transport, council rate relief, water‑bill discounts and a safety‑and‑security rebate.

Both initiatives aim to ease travel and living expenses for older Australians, affecting up to several hundred thousand senior residents across the two states.
