ASX 200 recovers from early slump as weak jobs data cools rate-hike bets

The Australian sharemarket experienced significant volatility, with the S&P/ASX 200 ultimately finishing near flat after an initial sharp decline. The market was heavily influenced by disappointing employment data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which showed a loss of 39,300 jobs in September and an increase in the unemployment rate to 4.7%.

This softening in the labor market led to a decrease in bond yields as investors scaled back expectations for further interest rate hikes by the Reserve Bank of Australia. The shift in sentiment allowed defensive sectors, such as consumer staples and financial services, to rally and offset losses in other areas.

Conversely, the mining and technology sectors faced downward pressure. Mining stocks, including major players like BHP and Rio Tinto, saw declines, while the technology sector struggled amid a broader global sell-off in artificial intelligence-related equities. Small-cap stocks also faced selling pressure during the session.
