Australian ASX reaches record high on mining rally and US‑Iran peace hopes
The S&P/ASX 200 index surged to around 9,280‑9,300 points, posting a fresh record high for a second consecutive day. The rally was led by mining stocks, with major producers such as BHP Group, Rio Tinto, Fortescue Metals and Western Australian lithium firms posting gains of 1‑2% each.
Gold prices jumped about 0.8% to roughly US$4,280 per ounce, lifting gold miners, while copper and other base‑metal prices also rose. Market sentiment was buoyed by growing optimism that a US‑Iran peace agreement could reopen the Strait of Hormuz, easing oil‑price pressures. The Dow Jones closed at a record high, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq slipped modestly.
Swiss miner Glencore announced plans for a secondary listing on the ASX in October, adding to the mining‑focused narrative. The Australian dollar traded near US$0.706 throughout the session. The combination of commodity strength, geopolitical optimism and supportive corporate news drove the Australian market to its highest level on record.
