Australian sheep industry faces labor constraints amid high demand
A recent Rabobank report indicates that the Australian sheep industry must focus on productivity gains to capitalize on growing global demand for sheep meat. While market conditions are increasingly attractive and global competition is low, the nation's sheep flock is currently near record lows, sitting at its second-lowest point in the past century.
Labor has been identified as the primary roadblock to flock expansion. Unlike other agricultural sectors where machinery can increase output without a proportional increase in staff, sheep farming requires more labor—such as shearers and workers for crutching and drenching—as stock numbers grow. This prevents producers from easily achieving economies of scale unless automation and improved production methods are implemented.
