Australian sheepmeat industry rolls out cuts‑based MSA program

Meat Standards Australia has launched a cuts‑based grading system for sheepmeat at the Gundagai Meat Processor. The scheme, introduced in May, will separate lamb, hogget and mutton into distinct quality tiers and enable branded products, mirroring the earlier beef MSA program.

University of New England meat‑science professor Peter McGilchrist said the new system uses intramuscular‑fat measurements to allow producers to capture more value and that it will evolve over time. He noted that the industry previously sold lamb as a single product and that the inclusion of hoggets is a recent addition aimed at further segmenting the market.
