Australian Signals Directorate launches ASD Essentials cybersecurity framework
The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) has launched ASD Essentials, a new cybersecurity framework designed to replace the long-standing Essential Eight. The new model shifts from a prescriptive, checklist-based compliance system toward a principles-based, threat-informed approach. It aims to address increasingly sophisticated threats and complex modern environments, including cloud and operational technology, by focusing on security outcomes and phased priorities rather than fixed maturity levels.
While the shift toward effectiveness-based assessment is viewed as a positive evolution, the Australian Computer Society (ACS) has raised concerns regarding the lack of standardized assessor qualifications. ACS CEO Dr. Prins Ralston warned that the framework relies heavily on “expert judgement” without defining the training or standards required for those conducting assessments. The ACS noted that without clear accountability for assessors, inconsistent judgements could lead to inaccurate security ratings, potentially giving organizational boards a false sense of security.
