Australian Signals Directorate launches ASD Essentials framework

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) has launched ‘ASD Essentials’, a new cybersecurity framework designed to replace the widely used Essential Eight. The new framework aims to help organizations increase resilience against a complex cyberthreat landscape.

Designed for Commonwealth entities, large organizations, and critical infrastructure operators, the Essentials framework provides threat-informed and prioritized measures. It is structured into focused chapters to address diverse technological needs. The initial release includes three foundational chapters: Essentials for enterprise IT, Essentials for operational technology (OT), and Essentials for cloud environments, including SaaS and PaaS.

The framework also includes guidance for AI-enabled systems. During the transition period, the ASD will maintain both the Essential Eight and the new Essentials framework on its website. Organizations are advised to continue meeting current regulatory obligations until official regulatory changes are communicated.
