Australian social services call for official poverty measures

During Anti-Poverty Week, various Australian social service organizations are calling on the Federal Government to establish official poverty measures and targets to reduce it. Advocates argue that without standardized data, it is difficult to understand the true extent of poverty, address its causes, or implement effective policies. Currently, 156 countries utilize official poverty measures to guide support systems.

In the Australian Capital Territory, ACTCOSS reports that an estimated one in seven residents and one in six children live in poverty. Research indicates that rising costs are leading to increased food insecurity, transport difficulties, and inadequate housing. Community leaders note a growing number of working families are requiring crisis services, such as food banks, due to cost-of-living pressures.

In New South Wales, a coalition including Mission Australia, St Vincent de Paul Society, and Campbelltown City Council is hosting community information events to assist those struggling with rising costs. These initiatives aim to provide guidance on housing, tenancy support, and food relief to individuals facing homelessness or urgent needs.
