Australian study links disposable cups to microplastic release

An Australian study has revealed that disposable cups release millions of microplastics into beverages, posing potential public health and environmental concerns. Researchers from Griffith University reviewed 30 scientific studies and tested 400 cups to determine how much plastic material is released during use.

The findings indicate that the release of microplastics increases as the temperature of the liquid rises. Measured quantities ranged from several hundred to over 8 million particles per liter. The material of the cup is also a critical factor; cups made entirely of plastic, such as polyethylene or polypropylene, release more particles than cardboard cups lined with a thin plastic layer due to their rougher surfaces.

With approximately 500 billion disposable cups used annually, the study highlights a significant issue regarding the ingestion of plastic fragments through hot drinks.
