Australian supermarkets report varied first-quarter results

Woolworths Group reported a 6.9 per cent increase in food retail sales for the first quarter of the 2027 financial year, totaling $14.8 billion. The growth was attributed to a successful Disney collectables campaign involving Ooshies and increased consumer demand for private label groceries as shoppers manage cost-of-living pressures. Overall group sales for Woolworths rose 4.7 per cent to $19.3 billion, though the W Living division saw a slight decline of 0.7 per cent.

Coles Group is preparing to release its first-quarter FY27 sales update, with analysts at UBS projecting group sales of approximately $11.29 billion, representing 3 per cent growth. While the supermarket segment is expected to perform respectably due to improved product availability and online expansion, the liquor business is projected to see a 2.1 per cent decline in sales.
