Australian surf clubs secure multi‑million redevelopment funding

The City of Joondalup council in Western Australia postponed a decision on the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club’s $30.4 million redevelopment, citing a $10.5 million funding shortfall and escalating cost estimates that have risen from $8.85 million in 2021 to the current figure. The project, which would replace the ageing club with a two‑storey facility, upgraded foreshore access, parking, a public toilet block and a 302‑seat café, currently has $20.4 million pledged from the city, state government, Lotterywest and the club itself. Council member Cr Adrian Hill moved the deferral to allow more detailed cost information before a final vote.

In New South Wales, the state government announced a $10 million contribution to rebuild the North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club, covering one‑third of the expected rebuild cost. Premier Chris Minns and Sport Minister Steve Kamper highlighted the importance of modern facilities for volunteer lifesavers. The funding follows the appointment of a lead design consultant and the removal of a heritage listing, allowing demolition of the structurally deficient sections and construction of a new medium‑size clubhouse.
