Australian Tax Office Enables Pre‑Filled Returns for Millions

The Australian Taxation Office announced that pre‑filled tax information, comprising more than 100 million data items from employers, banks and insurers, is now available for individuals with straightforward affairs to lodge their returns.

Assistant Commissioner Anita Challen said taxpayers can start lodging via myTax or a registered tax professional, and that most income statements are ready. The filing window opened on 1 July, with the deadline of 31 October; late returns may incur penalties of $364 up to $1,820.

A Finder survey found about 38 % of Australians expect a refund, of whom 58 % plan to save the money, 14 % to pay household bills and 6 % to reduce mortgage debt. The ATO advises people to review the pre‑fill data and claim only eligible deductions.
