Australian Taxation Office issues aged superannuation debt notices

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is issuing debt notices to small businesses regarding alleged superannuation debts dating back more than five years. The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) Australia has reported an increase in these notices, with some involving amounts in the tens of thousands of dollars.

ICB Australia CEO Amanda Linton noted that some businesses are receiving notices for debts they were already paying via existing plans or for amounts that, upon investigation, were not actually outstanding. There are concerns that automated processes and incomplete data matching are causing these errors.

Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson has criticized the ATO's approach, suggesting the agency is using incomplete data to target small businesses, potentially exposing employers to significant penalties and compliance costs despite having no actual debt.
