Australian Taxation Office warns influencers over undeclared perks
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has issued new guidelines targeting content creators, including influencers, streamers, and podcasters, regarding the declaration of non-monetary income. The agency stated that free products, services, or experiences received in exchange for promotion must generally be declared at their market value, regardless of whether the creator operates as a registered business or a hobbyist.
Assistant Commissioner Anita Challen noted that many creators fail to realize they have transitioned from hobbyists to business owners for tax purposes as their audiences grow. The ATO warned that it can identify undeclared income through data-matching with online platforms, lifestyle asset programs, and community tip-offs, which may trigger audits.
Beyond direct payments, the ATO highlighted that advertising revenue, sponsorship deals, affiliate commissions, subscriptions, donations, and tips are all considered taxable income. Industry experts noted that younger creators engaging in contra deals—exchanging content for goods—are particularly at risk of falling into tax traps, especially during high-volume periods like the Christmas season.
