Isthmus of Corinth maritime collision leaves one dead

A fatal maritime collision occurred in the Gulf of Corinth near the Isthmus of Corinth late Saturday night. The Barents, a 50-meter yacht flying the Maltese flag, collided with a small fishing boat carrying two Greek men.

One of the occupants of the small boat, a 71-year-old man, died after being transported to the Corinth General Hospital. The second occupant, a younger man, sustained serious injuries and remains hospitalized with multiple fractures. The yacht was carrying six passengers and 11 crew members at the time of the incident.

Following the collision, the yacht's captain was arrested as part of an in-flagrante delicto process. Authorities are investigating several factors, including whether the small fishing boat was displaying the required navigation lights. The captain will undergo alcohol and toxicology testing to determine if any substances contributed to the accident. The vessel has been detained by the Coast Guard pending further investigation.
