Australian Travel Insurers Say Heatwaves Alone Won’t Trigger Coverage

Australian travelers facing extreme heat and wildfires across Europe, the United States and Canada are being advised that heatwaves by themselves are generally not a valid reason to cancel trips under standard travel insurance policies. Natalie Smith, spokesperson for Comparetravelinsurance.com.au, explained that coverage may only apply if a destination becomes uninhabitable or if the Australian government issues a formal “Do Not Travel” warning.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has not issued a travel warning for the current heatwave, although the Smartraveller portal notes risks of evacuations in Greece and Spain and has updated advice for France where wildfires are affecting tourist areas. Travelers are encouraged to negotiate flexibility directly with airlines, hotels or tour operators, as policy changes are unlikely to be reimbursed by insurers.

Where wildfires accompany the heat, insurance claims may be considered if the disaster directly disrupts an itinerary. Policies could then cover cancellation costs, additional travel expenses or compensation for unused prepaid bookings, depending on individual terms and conditions.
