Australian universities examine PFAS 'forever chemicals' health risks
Researchers at the University of Adelaide are developing new approaches to detect, treat and assess the risks of per‑ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), the so‑called “forever chemicals” that persist in soil, water and food chains. The team is improving measurement techniques, creating methods to trap and immobilise PFAS in contaminated sites, and partnering with CSIRO to test floating wetlands for water‑borne remediation. Their work also investigates PFAS impacts on fertility, showing that even low‑level exposure in mice can damage eggs and embryos.
A separate study by the University of Wollongong examined PFAS accumulation in over 70 species of toothed whales and dolphins worldwide. The researchers found rising PFAS concentrations, especially in coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean, and noted that young male cetaceans carry the highest loads while adult females show lower levels, likely due to transfer of chemicals to calves via placenta and milk. "Mothers are likely offloading their own chemical burdens to their calves," said Dr Katharina Peters. The study highlights the threat to marine health, reproduction and the potential parallel risks for humans.
Both projects underscore growing scientific and regulatory concern over PFAS pollution, its widespread presence in the environment, and its long‑term effects on wildlife and human health.
