Australian War Memorial receives 9/11 Ground Zero relics

Relics from the September 11 terrorist attacks at Ground Zero have been donated to the Australian War Memorial. The items were collected by Major David Bergman, one of four Australian Army Engineer Officers who assisted in the recovery efforts in New York City.

While on a military study tour in North America, the officers were deployed to New York following the attacks. After the Australian Embassy coordinated with the New York Police Department, Major Bergman was seconded to the Port Authority Police Department. He participated in the search for human remains and significant objects within the collapsed structures, working deep below the surface level of the site.
