Australian women face high rates of mental health struggles

A new report indicates that more than half of Australian women are struggling with mental health issues. The data shows significantly higher rates of psychological distress among women with specific female-related conditions. For instance, 48 per cent of women with endometriosis reported depression, while 47 per cent reported anxiety or generalized anxiety disorder. Among women with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), 47 per cent reported depression and 39 per cent reported anxiety.

Experts are calling for a shift in the healthcare system to integrate mental health assessments into standard women’s health services, including care for menopause, fertility, and pelvic pain. Researchers noted that women are often forced to navigate separate systems for physical and mental health, which can be difficult during periods of medical vulnerability. Despite an increase in women seeking help, approximately one in three women experiencing mental health issues still do not seek support, often citing financial costs or a belief that they can manage on their own.
