Australian women in politics face widespread online abuse
A survey by Women for Election reveals that 89 percent of Australian women in public office or seeking election have experienced online abuse related to their roles. The research, which surveyed 110 women, highlights a significant trend of digital harassment targeting female politicians.
Individual accounts from officials such as Gosford MP Liesl Tesch and Newcastle deputy lord mayor Charlotte McCabe illustrate the personal toll of this behavior. Tesch described the experience as frightening and noted that the abuse can be harmful and wearing. The prevalence of such harassment raises concerns that it may deter women from entering or remaining in public service.
