Australia's aged care sector shifts toward relationship-based care and digital resilience

The Australian aged care sector is undergoing significant shifts in both clinical approach and operational infrastructure. To address the needs of an aging population, providers are increasingly focusing on emotional wellbeing and human connection. Whiddon, in partnership with the US-based organization Memory Bridge, has launched the RBC Enrich pilot. This 16-month initiative utilizes specially trained staff to foster deep connections with residents living with moderate to advanced dementia, treating perceived behavioral issues as forms of communication rather than mere symptoms.

Simultaneously, the sector is becoming more digitally integrated through cloud-based systems, AI, and digital care platforms. While the Australian Government’s Aged Care Data and Digital Strategy 2024–2029 aims to create a more automated and person-centered system, this digital shift necessitates heightened digital resilience. Beyond cybersecurity, providers must ensure they can continue delivering critical care services during software failures, cloud outages, or network disruptions to prevent service interruptions from impacting resident safety.
