Australia's AIHW Publishes First National Miscarriage Statistics

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) released its first official data on early pregnancy loss in Australia. The scoping study, which examined women who gave birth in 2022, found that 30% had experienced at least one miscarriage and 10% had two or more – a proportion that has remained stable since 2017. Miscarriage accounted for roughly four‑in‑five pregnancy‑loss‑related hospitalisations.

Hospital records show between 34,000 and 37,400 admissions each year from 2019 to 2025, with about 80% occurring in public hospitals and 60% of those patients aged 30‑39. Out‑of‑pocket costs have been largely unchanged, while claims for curettage procedures have halved. Isabelle Oderberg, co‑founder of the Early Pregnancy Loss Coalition, called the release “a huge development” for shaping public health policy. AIHW spokesperson Deanna Eldridge said the data will support better care, monitoring and policy decisions for those affected by pregnancy loss in Australia.
