Australia's beer sales surge during FIFA World Cup
Research firm Circana reported that the FIFA World Cup lifted on‑premise beer sales in Australia by 40.4% in the June quarter, with overall food‑service spending up 5.3% year‑on‑year. Classic pub meals such as steak sandwiches, wedges and fish saw sales rise by more than 50%. Australian Venue Co chief executive Paul Waterson said the tournament boosted the company’s sales by about 3% in late June and early July, while industry analysts noted the event’s broader impact on bars and hotels.
In the United States, NielsenIQ’s latest Beer Pulse report showed total beer dollar sales falling 3.4% year‑over‑year in the four weeks to 18 July, as the post‑Independence Day lift and interest in the FIFA Club World Cup faded. Case volume dropped 4.8%, with reduced consumer demand accounting for 79% of the decline. Premium and craft segments posted double‑digit drops, while non‑alcoholic beer grew 11.2% in dollars, highlighting a shift toward lower‑alcohol options.
