Australia's Bondi Beach Terror Inquiry Overlooks NSW Antisemitism Report

On 14 December 2025 a terrorist attack at a Chanukah gathering on Bondi Beach killed 15 people. The Australian government created a Royal Commission, led by former High Court judge Virginia Bell, to investigate how security failures allowed the massacre. The commission’s interim report blames “dangerous self‑complacency” and a shift of intelligence resources away from domestic terrorism after the 2019 decline of ISIS.

Antisemitic incidents have surged dramatically since the October 2023 Hamas‑Israel war, rising from an average of 342 reports per year to 1 858, with a record 2 062 incidents recorded by September 2024. A 13‑year‑old girl testified, “It makes me scared to be a Jewish child in Australia.”

The NSW Parliament’s own antisemitism inquiry was subsumed into the Royal Commission, limiting robust cross‑examination. Critics note that witnesses were not rigorously questioned, and the inquiry’s findings that conflating criticism of Israel with antisemitism fuels hate were down‑played. One participant was labeled “NSW’s Gaslighter‑in‑Chief.” The appointment of anti‑racism adviser Jillian Segal, who advocated bans on pro‑Palestine protests, has also been criticised for stifling debate.
