Australia's Data Centre Expansion Sparks Community Opposition and Energy Policy Debate

Rapid growth of data centres in Melbourne’s western suburbs has prompted a local controversy. A fast‑tracked proposal to enlarge the NextDC M3 facility in West Footscray would quadruple its size, drawing opposition from residents and the Citizens of Tottenham group who warn of heightened noise, water use and electricity demand. The expansion is part of a broader surge in data‑centre construction across the region, driven by rising AI and cloud‑computing needs.

Nationally, the sector, which already consumes about 2 % of total electricity on the eastern seaboard, could account for up to 6 % by 2030. The Albanese government is weighing new obligations that would require operators to invest in renewable generation and grid upgrades. Companies such as AirTrunk and NextDC argue they can act as “grid participants,” funding infrastructure and renewable contracts to help stabilise the power system while meeting expanding demand.
