Australia's Department of Defence misclassifies Dell as SME
Australia's Department of Defence is facing scrutiny following reports that it misclassified Dell Australia as a small-to-medium enterprise (SME) in at least 20 separate contract notices on the AusTender procurement website.
Under the Commonwealth Procurement Rules, an SME is defined as an independent business with fewer than 200 full-time equivalent staff. Despite Dell being a global technology giant with nearly 100,000 employees, the Department of Defence repeatedly logged the local subsidiary as an SME across various IT hardware and enterprise equipment contracts. An analysis by the procurement platform Tenders+ suggests these errors are not isolated incidents but indicate systemic administrative flaws and data entry failures.
These misclassifications potentially distort official metrics used to track government spending targets intended to support domestic small businesses. Experts warn that incorrectly tagging multinational corporations as SMEs masks structural barriers faced by genuine Australian technology vendors and undermines transparency in federal procurement processes.
