Australia's fragmented EV charger rollout lacks central authority

Australia has more than 1,300 public charging sites, providing over 4,000 ports, with 54% being DC fast chargers rated at 50 kW or higher. About 88% of the population live within 5 km of a charger, 93% within 10 km and 97% within 20 km, but coverage is uneven, with major gaps in inland regions.

The public network is operated by a mix of private companies. Chargefox runs the majority of chargers in Tasmania (83%) and Western Australia (58%), creating a vulnerability if a single operator fails. Other providers include Evie, Tesla, BP, Ampol, Jolt, Explore, EVX and others. No single agency oversees the rollout; policy direction and funding come from the Australian government, while states, territories, local councils, electricity distributors and regulators such as the Australian Energy Regulator and the Australian Energy Market Commission handle standards, grid connections and compliance. The fragmented governance has driven rapid private investment but resulted in an incoherent, sometimes unreliable charging network.
