Australia's gambling reforms face political pushback

Communications Minister Anika Wells said the government's gambling reform package is still being considered and is not likely to be abandoned, noting that normal legislative push‑back is expected. The proposal limits television gambling ads to three per hour between 6 am and 8:30 pm, bans ads from live sport broadcasts, stadiums and player jerseys, but stops short of a total ban recommended by the late Labor MP Peta Murphy.

Opposition and cross‑bench parties argue the bill is insufficient. Coalition spokesperson Sarah Henderson warned that the Senate will force Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to concede on stricter regulations after testimony about addicts being lured with drugs, escorts and free bets. The Greens, One Nation leader Pauline Hanson and other MPs have called for stronger measures, and further amendments are expected before the legislation can pass.
