Australia's June 2026 EV sales hit record as novated leasing drives growth
In June 2026, electric vehicles accounted for 36 % of all new‑car sales in Australia, a historic high driven by the popularity of novated leasing and the government’s Electric Car Discount. The National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association (NALSPA) reported that battery‑electric vehicles topped 32,500 units, more than double the share recorded a year earlier.
NALSPA chief executive Rohan Martin said, “Australians have set another monthly record in EV sales and the Electric Car Discount is central to making that possible.” The policy, which exempts eligible EVs from fringe‑benefits tax, is helping working households offset higher upfront costs amid volatile fuel prices.
Chinese manufacturers are leading the surge, with BYD delivering 18,800 units and its Sea Lion 7 model becoming the top‑selling EV at 4,730 units. Tesla’s Model Y also set a record, selling 8,072 units in the month. High petrol prices have accelerated the shift, with many consumers opting to replace fuel‑burning vehicles with electric models.
