Australia's local news crisis deepens amid AI misinformation concerns

Since 2019, 184 Australian news outlets have shut down, leaving 29 local government areas without any local news service. Regional newspaper readership has halved, falling from 34 % of audiences in 2016 to just 17 % today. At least 58 % of Australians say they use AI tools such as chatbots to find information, but trust in news generated by these systems is very low – only 19 % express confidence. Moreover, just 13 % of users consistently follow links to original sources, and 77 % are worried about misinformation spreading online. The loss of reliable local journalism threatens informed citizenship, democratic participation and social cohesion across regional communities.

The Digital News Report, which tracks Australian media habits over more than a decade, highlights these trends and warns that reduced access to trustworthy local news can erode community cohesion and democratic accountability.
