Australia's minimum wage rise gives modest relief as inflation pressures persist

The Consumer Price Index in Australia rose 4 % over the 12 months to May, pushing up living costs for housing, transport and groceries. In response, the Fair Work Commission increased the national minimum wage to $26.44 per hour – a $1.49 gain that slightly exceeds the CPI – and raised the full‑time weekly rate to $1,004.90. Recruitment agency Hays reports that half of Australian workers still feel underpaid despite recent raises. Employers are tying pay rises more closely to measurable performance, as illustrated by Cubic Promote founder Charles Liu, who gave his 30 staff a 5 % increase after assessing their contributions. Broad‑based wage growth is expected to remain modest until business confidence improves.
