Australia's national security depends on local business resilience

Australia faces a strategic vulnerability regarding the resilience of local businesses in regional communities. While government investment often focuses on protecting critical infrastructure, the loss of local economic capacity during crises—such as cyclones, floods, or bushfires—can pose a significant national security risk.

In northern Australia, small communities support essential defence operations, resource industries, and supply chains. If local businesses that maintain equipment, transport supplies, or support the workforce fail to reopen after a disaster, the resulting loss of skilled workers and essential services can undermine national resilience.

The importance of economic stability during conflict is illustrated by Ukraine, where World Bank-supported programs have assisted approximately 21,000 small and medium businesses, preserving over 50,000 jobs and generating US$318 million in exports despite the Russian invasion.
