Australia's Renewable Build‑out and $1 B Solar‑Battery Project Keep Power Costs Low

Australia’s rapid expansion of renewable generation and large‑scale battery storage has insulated the country from the surge in global energy prices caused by the war in the Middle East. The International Energy Agency reported that wholesale electricity prices fell about 30% year‑on‑year in the first half of 2026, and are projected to remain among the world’s lowest through 2027 as households charge batteries during the day and feed solar excess back into the grid.

At the same time, the Richmond Valley Solar Farm and Battery Energy Storage System – the nation’s biggest solar‑battery hybrid – secured more than AUD 1 billion in financing and is moving to construction in New South Wales. The first stage will combine a 200 MW solar plant with a 275 MW, 2,200 MWh lithium‑iron‑phosphate battery, backed by Ark Energy, Korea Zinc and a long‑term energy service agreement from the NSW government.
