Austrasse renovation in Basel delayed until late 2027

The renovation of Austrasse in Basel is now scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. This revised timeline follows a legally binding decision by the Basel Appellations Court, which dismissed appeals against the street's redevelopment.

The project, involving the Construction and Transport Department, BVB, and IWB, includes the renewal of tram tracks, road surfaces, and sidewalks in three stages. Due to previous legal challenges, the project is expected to finish approximately one year later than originally planned.

Construction schedules will be impacted by parallel work on Steinenring. Between April and June 2027, BVB will largely pause work on Austrasse to accommodate detour traffic from the Steinenring renewal. During this brief period, tram line 6 will temporarily run through Austrasse before being diverted again via Steinenring until October 2027. The street remains closed to car and bicycle traffic in the construction zone.
